Matching the device to the hazard

Backflow prevention is selected by degree of hazard, not by pipe size alone. Dual-check valves suit low-hazard residential applications; reduced-pressure principle (RPZ) assemblies are specified where a health hazard exists, such as boiler make-up, irrigation and process water. Premise isolation requirements are set by your municipality, and most require annual testing by a certified tester, so plan for accessible installation and clearance around the test cocks.

Backwater valves guard against sewer surcharge backing up into basements — many GTA municipalities offer subsidies for retrofitting them. Grease interceptors are sized by flow rate and retention capacity for the fixtures they serve; undersizing is the most common reason a kitchen installation fails inspection.
