Choosing the right connection

Compression fittings make a serviceable joint with no heat and no special tool, which makes them the default under sinks and at stops. Push-fit brass is faster still and works on copper, PEX and CPVC, but needs the tube properly deburred and fully inserted to depth or it will weep. Barstock fittings are machined from solid rod rather than cast, giving a denser, more consistent body for higher-pressure and gas applications.

Black iron fittings are for fuel gas and are not interchangeable with potable water brass. For anything carrying drinking water, confirm the fitting is low-lead compliant — Ontario requires it for potable service.
