Support spacing and material compatibility

Support spacing is set by pipe material and size — copper and plastic need closer spacing than steel, and horizontal drainage has its own requirements under the Ontario Building Code. Undersupported plastic sags between hangers and creates a low point that holds water.

Material compatibility matters more than most installers expect. A bare galvanized or steel hanger in direct contact with copper tube sets up galvanic corrosion, which is why copper-coated and plastic-lined hangers exist. Use them wherever the hanger touches copper.

Choosing the hanger type

Clevis and swivel hangers suspend pipe from rod and allow for alignment; split ring hangers open to fit around existing pipe; riser clamps carry vertical pipe at floor penetrations; beam clamps attach to structural steel without drilling. Stocked in depth for the trade at Richmond Hill.
