Choosing a stop

Match the inlet to the pipe you are connecting to and the outlet to the supply line you are running. Compression stops are the most common on copper because they need no heat; push-fit stops work across copper, PEX and CPVC and go on in seconds; PEX and expansion stops connect directly to tubing without an adapter.

Quarter-turn ball stops have almost entirely replaced multi-turn compression stops, and for good reason. A multi-turn stop that has sat open for fifteen years will very often refuse to close, or close and then weep from the packing — which turns a fixture swap into a mainline shutdown.

Angle or straight

Angle stops turn the supply 90° and suit pipe coming out of the wall; straight stops suit pipe coming up out of the floor. Confirm which you need before you go to site, because it is the single most common reason for a second trip.
