Testing DWV systems
Drainage and vent systems are tested before they are concealed, and the test method is set by your jurisdiction — typically a water test where the system is filled to a required head, or an air test held at a set pressure for a set period. Your inspector will tell you which they accept.
Mechanical test plugs expand against the pipe wall to seal an opening. Test balls inflate and can be positioned partway along a run to isolate a section. Both are sized to the pipe's inside diameter, so confirm the pipe material as well as the nominal size — ABS, PVC, cast iron and clay of the same nominal size have different inside diameters.
Working safely
A plug under test pressure stores real energy. Never stand over a plug being pressurised, do not exceed the manufacturer's rated back-pressure, and release pressure before removing. Blown-out test plugs cause serious injuries every year.
