Treating the right problem

Water treatment only works when it targets the actual water chemistry, so start with a water test rather than a guess. Hardness is treated with a softener; sediment and turbidity with filtration; taste, odour and dissolved solids with reverse osmosis; and bacteriological concerns with UV disinfection.

Order matters. Sediment filtration goes ahead of a softener to protect the resin bed, and UV goes last, immediately before the point of use, because UV needs clear water to be effective — turbidity shadows organisms from the lamp.

Softeners and UV

Softeners are sized on hardness and daily water use, so the unit regenerates on a sensible schedule rather than constantly. Much of the GTA sits on hard water, which is why softeners extend the life of tankless heat exchangers and fixtures noticeably.

UV lamps lose output long before they stop glowing and are replaced annually regardless of appearance. Sleeves need periodic cleaning.
